The baby was found at a house on Holywell Heights in the Wincobank area on Sunday morning, after police were called to reports of concern for her safety. South Yorkshire Police said despite the best efforts of police and paramedics, the baby died at the scene.
She said she was not aware of any pregnant women living at the house and was confused when she found out a newborn baby had died at the address. Det Ch Insp Tom Woodward, leading the investigation, said: "We recognise this is deeply distressing for those who would have loved to have a chance to love this baby girl, for the emergency services who responded and for the community who will inevitably be shocked by this incident.
Floral tributes have been left near the scene at Holywell Heights A neighbour told the BBC that a family moved into the house where the baby was found about eight months ago - a man, a woman and three teenagers. Officers received reports of concern for the safety of a baby at 5.58am, South Yorkshire Police said.
Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Emma Knight said on Sunday: “We are aware news of this will be deeply concerning and I want to reassure our local communities that we have a dedicated team of detectives and officers hard at work to ensure justice is secured for the baby girl at the heart of this investigation.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said officers were continuing their investigations in the Holywell Heights area and asked anyone with information that might be useful to contact them. The neighbour said she had not heard any noise at the property before the arrival of the police on Sunday morning.
According to the neighbour, they were quiet but had a lot of visitors, with large gatherings regularly held at the three-bedroom house, though there was little noise. She said a chaotic scene ensued, with many police officers and a medic at the property.
