MapQuest surges in rankings after Google bows to Trump and re-labels Lake Ontario

When Trump signed the order last Thursday, MapQuest wrote on X, “We’re not changing it,” along with a map view of the body of water labeled “Lake Ontario. The “OG of online mapping,” as the company calls itself, announced on Thursday that it would not change the name of Lake Ontario on its maps to Lake America, despite Trump’s executive order directing the U.S. Department of the Interior to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming service.
After trade talks between the U.S. and Canada fell apart earlier this month, Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario , which is bounded by the Canadian province of Ontario and New York, as Lake America. On Saturday, Google Maps announced it was complying with Trump’s decision, explaining that it updates Google Maps to reflect the name changes in official government sources.
MapQuest, which launched in 1996 when users printed directions on their family computer, saw a surge in popularity after pushing back against Trump’s executive order. Both Apple Maps and Google Maps changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America last year, after Trump issued a similar name-changing executive order.
"We took the same approach we did with the Gulf of Mexico: be part of the conversation, and give people an app that keeps the names they're familiar with," Doug Berger, general manager of MapQuest, said in a statement. Meanwhile, Trump’s trade war with Canada has escalated with a 50 percent tariff on about $20 billion of Canadian imports, the Associated Press reported.
As of Monday morning, Apple Maps has yet to rename the Great Lake to Lake America and has not issued a statement about its plans.
