Korea Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Eclipses ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

Spider-Man: Brand New Day was in its fifth session, taking its global count to $2.33B ($1.44B int’l, $891.5M domestic), the fourth highest movie ever at the worldwide B.O., while Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey stands at $1.55B ($988.7M int’l, $563.8M domestic).
Of note this past weekend, in Korea, The Odyssey passed Brand New Day ‘s gross to become the biggest MPA title of the year there. In the deepest of summer, Odysseus came close to throwing Spider-Man off the top of the global weekend box office, but the aranea superhero had the upper hand over the crusty ole warrior, $66.2M to $62.9M.
Superhero blockbuster “ Spider-Man: Brand New Day ” remained in second place during its fifth weekend, pulling in $1.9 million from 250,442 admissions over the frame. Odyssey has taken over Avengers: Infinity War to become the 6th biggest MPA movie of all-time in Korea.
“ The Odyssey ” held onto the top spot at the South Korean box office during the weekend of Aug. Top market cumes to date are China ($227.4M), UK ($125.2M), Mexico ($88.2M), France ($81.6M), Brazil ($70.2M), Germany ($62.8M), South Korea ($62.7M), India ($61.5M), Australia ($57.1M) and Spain ($42.6M).

Back in the states, this weekend’s performance drove Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre to the highest individual theater performance of any Imax title in history with $4.4M to date. Directed by Kim Soo-hoon, the musical fantasy adventure follows Princess Romi, Heartsping, and their companions exploring an undersea kingdom to rescue Queen Velita.
Popular on Variety Local family road-trip drama “The Journey to Gyeongju” debuted in third place, generating $912,660 from 124,963 admissions across 801 screens. Starring Lee Jung-eun, Gong Hyo-jin, Park So-dam, Lee Yeon, and Byun Yo-han, the film has collected $1.3 million from 192,384 total admissions since its Aug.
The Imax global weekend was $24.6M ($8M domestic, $16.6M int’l) for a running total for the exhibitor on the pic of $449M from 68 countries. Local animated film “Teenieping: Legend of the Whale Heartstone” finished in fifth place, adding $283,019 from 39,740 admissions.
