'A giant leap forward': Nasa launches powerful new space telescope

A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket lifts off carrying Kennedy Space Center Nasa's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Fox said The Nancy Grace Roman "is going to discover tens of thousands, maybe even 100,000 new exoplanets" - referring to planets located outside of our solar system.

The telescope was on display at the Goddard Space Center in April Astronomer Jenifer Millard said the telescope will be four times further from Earth than the Moon is, where a lot of infrared space cameras - made to pick up what she describes as "heat light"- operate.

Kennedy Space Center Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope, launched in 2021, also orbits the Sun around one million miles from Earth, but its field of vision is not as expansive. During her career, she was instrumental in getting the Hubble Space Telescope approved by US Congress and later said its most interesting discovery was dark energy.

"The Nancy Grace Roman is going to change the way we look at the Universe," said Nicky Fox, a Kennedy Space Center Nasa administrator. April Astronomer Jenifer Millard said, through the work of telescopes like The Nancy Grace Roman, scientists are hoping to create "enormous cosmic maps" of the Universe at various stages.
