US strikes Iranian launchers on Larak Island in first known attack in weeks

US forces have struck two Iranian launchers on Iran's Larak island, a US official said, marking the first known American strikes on Iran since late July. Explosions were heard near Larak Island, which lies in the waterway, Iranian media outlets reported.

The US official said the strikes targeted launchers that were set to fire rockets carrying mines towards the Strait of Hormuz. It marks the first known US strike in Iran since US President Donald Trump paused a renewed military campaign in late July.

Iranian forces had been preparing to launch rockets carrying mines into the strait, the unnamed U.S. official said. Iran’s Fars News Agency had reported that explosions were heard near the island.

Hossein Mohebbi, the IRGC's spokesman called the attack a "strategic and fatal mistake by the Trump regime" and said that the "enemy will pay the consequences of this miscalculation in both the economic and military fields".

In response to the new offensive, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement that the U.S. attack “will be answered by the sons of Iran and will result in the punishment of the aggressor,” Axios reported. The US and Israel launched wide-ranging strikes on Iran on 28 February, with Iran responding by attacking Israel, US bases and allied states in the Gulf, and effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz to marine traffic.

Iran's Tasnim news agency, which is affiliated with the IRGC, said earlier that the attack was carried out by drones. The IRCG said the attack on Sunday killed and wounded several people, and vowed "response and punishment".

He said the deaths of Iranian leaders had also complicated diplomacy because “nobody knows who’s leading. “If we need to use kinetic strikes, we’ll use them,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Monday.

Still, attacks on ships in Hormuz have been reported almost daily, and Iran has maintained that the strait is closed.
