Hovland leads Tour Championship as Scheffler and McIlroy impress

“I think the difference today was I just putted a bit better,” said McIlroy, who was in a share of 23rd in the 29-strong field at the start of the day and now sits in a tie for seventh. "I just left myself in better spots on the greens," said McIlroy.

“I mean, 65 out there, especially with that finish, super happy with that,” Hovland said. The 37-year-old found form with his putter as he holed nine birdies, including three in a row on 15, 16 and 17 to post the joint lowest round of the day.

Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood and fellow Englishman Alex Fitzpatrick are a shot further adrift after both signed for 67s.
