Pope prays for dead, missing following catastrophic mudslides, floods in Nepal

As of Aug. 27, more than 1,300 people are missing in Nepal and Tibet, more than a hundred of whom were visiting Mount Kailash, a pilgrimage site sacred to several Eastern religions, including Hinduism and Buddhism, AP reported.
Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the U.S. Catholic Church’s international aid agency, said it was closely monitoring the situation in Nepal and announced it was “coordinating with Caritas Nepal and local partners to assess urgent needs and determine how best to support affected communities.” – – – Junno Arocho Esteves is an international correspondent for OSV News.
The apostolic administrator of Nepal also said that a priest of the vicariate, Father James Britto, was stranded after “he had gone to celebrate Mass on the other side of the river and was stranded. “This isn’t a distant problem; it’s a crisis unfolding in real-time, with new disasters every summer and monsoon,” said Pema Gyamtsho, the director general of ICIMOD.
According to The Associated Press, the U.S. Geological Survey initially reported an earthquake 41 miles north of Kathmandu Aug. 26. “We have about 25 Catholic families in the disaster area; they appear to be safe, but we are very worried about them,” he said.
He also said the local Church’s Caritas office was launching an appeal “to partners around the world” for assistance.
