Hannah Charles, lead epidemiologist for gastrointestinal infections at UKHSA, said: "We're working with Food Standards Agency and other public health agencies to investigate a salmonella outbreak that may be linked to eggs imported from outside of the UK.

Nick Allen, chief executive of the British Egg Industry Council, said hens in the UK had mandatory salmonella vaccinations, but "increasing volumes of imports" produced under "less stringent regulations" continue to arrive in Britain.

"Work has started to take necessary steps in co-ordination with the medical team, scouts, and Red Cross," Prime Minister Balendra Shah said in a social media post, after holding an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation.

Guan said Nepalese authorities had tried to send a helicopter to inspect the area because road access had been cut off, but strong winds were making it difficult for the aircraft to reach the site. The extent of the damage on the Tibetan side is unclear but the BBC spoke to Guan Daoxuan in Sichuan province who said he had lost contact with his wife late on Wednesday morning.

Authorities said 13 officers from the armed police force were missing from two posts in Rasuwa district, and they had not been able to contact dozens of other police officers. Jacquelyn McCormick, Head of Incidents at the Food Standards Agency, said eggs which are thoroughly cooked and handled hygienically should not present a food safety risk.

State media in China, which controls Tibet, say there are significant casualties and Nepalese officials said they anticipate "huge scale loss". Experts say it is likely there could be more cases to come and some people may have been unwell but not reported it.

Salmonella can be found in a number of food sources including raw or under-cooked poultry or meat and eggs.
