“Emergence of mpox in more countries in west Africa is to be expected,” said Prof Michael Marks, of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and University College London hospital. Since 2022, there have been almost 190,000 lab-confirmed cases of mpox reported worldwide in 145 countries.

The latter sparked a major global outbreak in 2022 when it appeared to undergo some changes that allowed it to spread more efficiently from person to person.
The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this month that mpox was on course to become endemic in the US. He said the countertariffs will focus on steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics, totaling nearly $20 billion worth of annual imports from the United States. "Canada's countertariffs are designed primarily to provide protection for Canadian industry impacted by U.S. tariffs and allow them to compete against U.S. products in the Canadian market," Champagne said.
Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the countermeasures will match U.S. tariffs "dollar for dollar, rate for rate," with tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on a range of exports from the U.S., effective Sept. 8.
"When the United States asked too much and offered too little, we chose to stand up for Canadians," Champagne said, referring to the failed talks. Unicef said it was concerned that of 46 suspected cases, 23 were children aged under 15 and most of those were aged under four.
But Carney said it was a bad deal and accused the U.S. of trying to " destroy our major industries. And he said the U.S. is considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to " Lake America.
