Bills batter Browns 31-7 as Sanders, Watson duel for Cleveland’s QB job
Confirmed
What we know
The Buffalo Bills defeated the Cleveland Browns 31-7 in a Preseason Week 2 game Saturday at Huntington Bank Field, the Associated Press reported. Cleveland’s open quarterback competition remained unresolved afterward: Shedeur Sanders threw a touchdown pass in limited work, while Deshaun Watson was booed and later criticized home fans.
Buffalo rested Josh Allen and most starters. A lengthy weather delay interrupted the first quarter. Browns coach Todd Monken said he would review tape before announcing a starter for the Sept. 13 opener at Jacksonville.
What's confirmed
- AP: Sanders completed 9 of 11 for 74 yards with one interception (tipped pick by Damar Hamlin) and an 8-yard TD pass to Luke Floriea after the delay.
- Watson went 5 of 12 for 35 yards with an interception, played into the fourth quarter, and said booing was “a little bit more personal” than performance — citing fans who cheered when he tore his Achilles in 2024.
- Bills (2-0): Kyle Allen 10 of 12 for 128 yards and a TD; Shane Buechele added a long scoring pass and a rushing TD. Browns fell to 0-2.
- Buffalo issued pregame condolences to DE Ed Oliver after the drowning death of his 2-year-old son in June.
What's still developing
- Monken’s Week 1 starter decision between Watson and Sanders was still pending Sunday.
- Status of Browns DE Alex Wright after a lower-leg injury in Thursday’s joint practice had not been clarified.
- Both clubs host Thursday preseason finales: Bills vs. Pittsburgh; Browns vs. New England. Seahawks at Titans (8 p.m. ET, FOX) closes Preseason Week 2 on Sunday night.
