What we know
Australia has confirmed its first case of H5 bird flu in a mainland mammal after testing of a long-nosed fur seal found dead at Beachport on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, about 300 kilometers south of Adelaide.
Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said Sunday the detection is concerning but not unexpected in areas with high wild-bird infection rates, and that authorities see no evidence yet of a wider marine-mammal outbreak or infection in poultry and agriculture systems.
