Canada races for interim U.S. deal before Aug. 19 50% tariff clock
Developing

What we know
With ten days until President Donald Trump’s threatened Aug. 19 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods—beer, plywood, milk, hockey sticks and more under Section 338—Canadian negotiators led by Canada–U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and chief negotiator Janice Charette intensified an interim push with USTR Jamieson Greer. Briefed sources said Ottawa was signaling it could address U.S. irritants on alcohol shelves, dairy access, and counter-tariffs if Washington offered meaningful Section 232 relief on steel, aluminum, autos, and lumber.
Canadian officials also warned that if the 50% list lands, Prime Minister Mark Carney would face strong domestic pressure to retaliate and less room for further concessions. Canadian Press reported Sunday that LeBlanc and Charette were heading back to Washington that week after two Greer meetings in two weeks; Chamber of Commerce president Candace Laing, after a Thursday briefing, said there was “decent” confidence in a pathway—but Oval Office sign-off remained the hinge.
