Ukrainian forces have targeted two major oil refineries in Russia with drone attacks, causing significant damage and large fires at the facilities. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the attacks were aimed at limiting Russia's oil revenues, which are used to finance the war in Ukraine.
The attacks hit the Slavneft-Yanos refinery in Yaroslavl and the Bashneft-Novoil refinery in Bashkortostan. Yaroslavl regional governor Mikhail Evraev reported that the Slavneft-Yanos refinery was on fire after the attack, with 93 drones shot down over the region. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, three people were killed in the town of Balakliya, Kharkiv region, in an overnight Russian drone attack.
The Ukrainian president also mentioned that two military patrol boats and shadow fleet vessels were hit in the Black Sea, targeting tankers used by Russia to illegally export sanctioned oil. Zelensky emphasized that the attacks were strengthening the chances for diplomacy and called for peace.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine since February 2022, and Russian military forces claimed to have intercepted or shot down 605 Ukrainian drones overnight over various regions.
