At least 35 people were killed and several others wounded when Sudanese army drones struck a traditional court in North Darfur, according to a rights group. The strike, which occurred on Sunday at about 1pm local time, targeted a court in the village of Garra al-Zawaya, serving as a local institution for resolving disputes.
The court session was being held under a tree with the participation of local community leaders, a witness from the area told AFP. The court building was also damaged in the attack, as documented by the Emergency Lawyers group, which has been tracking abuses in the ongoing civil war in Sudan.
Garra al-Zawaya is located near the town of Kabkabiya, about 150km west of el-Fasher, the army's last stronghold in Darfur. The RSF captured the area after a bloody offensive in October last year. According to the UN, more than 1,000 civilians were killed in drone strikes during the first five months of this year.
North Darfur State is one of the wilayat or states of Sudan, one of the five states composing the Darfur region. This area has been the site of ongoing conflict and violence for several years, with the latest drone strike adding to the toll of civilian casualties.
