Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Sunday labeled Saturday evening’s explosion at the Balzi Rossi restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square a “brutal terrorist attack.” Russian authorities said an unidentified woman carrying an improvised explosive device was stopped by a security guard before the blast; early tallies listed the woman, the guard and a customer among the dead, with more than 20 injured.

Later reporting put the death toll at five after two wounded died in hospital. The restaurant had been closed for a private event. Officials had not publicly identified victims or named a responsible party.
