"In response to a Russian missile of currently unknown type that entered Polish airspace and later crashed into Polish territory — one of many missiles fired by Russia at Ukraine overnight — NATO and Poland activated their air and ground defenses," NATO spokesperson Martin O'Donnell said.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X that it was “a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile” that violated NATO airspace. In Lublin, Tusk said: "Everything points to it being a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile, but we do not wish to pre-empt the results of a thorough investigation.
The Polish Air Force scrambled an F-16 fighter jet to intercept an unidentified object that entered its airspace at 3:40 a.m. local time, but it disappeared from radar six minutes later, according to the Operational Command of the Armed Forces.
According to Tomczyk, the pilot turned back about 20 seconds before the missile entered Poland because crossing into Polish airspace carried the risk of being engaged by Polish F-16 fighter jets. NATO members, including Poland, launched F-16 jets in response to the sighting of the missile, as well as an aerial refuelling aircraft and an airborne early warning plane, a spokesperson for the alliance said.
Polish authorities on Thursday said they were inspecting a crater near the city of Lublin for information clarifying a violation of its airspace. Polish investigators later concluded that the projectile was a stray Ukrainian air defense missile launched to intercept the Russian attack.
After the Russian missile landed in Poland on July 30, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Warsaw would consider supplying Ukraine with additional Patriot air defense missiles to help counter Russia's increasingly frequent ballistic missile attacks.
