Sir Keir Starmer resigns as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and is succeeded by Andy Burnham.

Later on Monday, Burnham announced a flurry of Cabinet appointments, offering a further indication of his government’s direction. As Labour leader, he led in the polls for many months against David Cameron and identified ahead of his time the public mood on the cost of living but was pilloried by some of the rightwing media as gaffe-prone and somewhat awkward.
