Astronomers have directly imaged Beta Pictoris d, the third planet discovered around the star Beta Pictoris, located 63 light-years away, using the James Webb Space Telescope and the European Southern Observatory. This new exoplanet is 100 times fainter than its sibling Beta Pictoris b, which was the first planet discovered in the system, and is smaller than the previously seen world around Beta Pictoris.

The discovery of Beta Pictoris d is significant as it is the faintest exoplanet ever imaged directly from Earth, marking a milestone in exoplanet research. Team co-leader Markus Bonse noted, 'The new planet is 100 times fainter than Beta Pictoris b, the famous planet in the same system, making it the faintest exoplanet ever imaged directly from Earth.

This new exoplanet is part of a system with two previously discovered gas giants. The team delved into 11 years of archival data to spot the third planet, highlighting the challenges and precision required for such discoveries. With only about 100 exoplanets discovered using direct imaging out of over 6,000 in NASA's exoplanet catalog, this finding is particularly noteworthy.

The discovery of Beta Pictoris d via direct imaging is encouraging for further direct imaging of planetary systems, which may also harbor faint planets. Systems with multiple directly imaged exoplanets are considered 'holy grails' of discoveries, as they can provide valuable insights into the diversity of exoplanets in the same formation environment.
