The UK government announced on Monday that it will ban support for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), designating it as a terrorist organization. This move comes in response to a series of arson and vandalism attacks on Jewish sites in Britain, which the government attributed to a proxy group backed by Iran.
Home Secretary Keir Starmer stated that the UK will take action against anyone providing support to the IRGC, under a new National Security Act. The designation also includes the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR), which has been blamed for attacks on Jewish targets in the UK.
The government's announcement follows the identification of the IMCR as being directed by members of the IRGC Qods Force, who were allegedly responsible for the attacks. The UK will also ban support for the Russian GRU Volunteer Corps, an international branch of Russian military intelligence.
The prime minister's decision is based on the belief that there is sufficient evidence to reasonably suspect that the IRGC and its branches are engaged in foreign power threat activity, necessitating action to protect the safety and interests of the UK.
