Stade police said that two people were arrested, including the suspected shooter. Video footage after the shooting showed a large police presence, along with other emergency service personnel and several ambulances on a residential street. Police said the deadly Stade shooting was likely an "extended family tragedy" triggered by a custody dispute, with the state interior minister describing it as "extremely cold-blooded act of violence.
Police said the shooting took place in the welfare facility on Dankersstrasse, a street south of Stade's town center. Five people died at the scene, while the sixth died in the hospital due to injuries sustained during the shooting, police said in a statement.
A suspect was arrested, while another two people were subject to "police measures" on suspicion of involvement, according to police. Several people were wounded, some seriously, the German news agency dpa reported, citing police.
Police previously said two suspects were arrested, and one was believed to have fired the shots. Stade police earlier said in a statement shared on WhatsApp that a "major operation" was underway on Dankersstrasse, calling on citizens to steer clear of the area and follow the instructions of the emergency services on the scene.
City Councillor Carsten Brokelmann said the shootings took place near a day care center and a primary school.
