What we know

Ukraine launched one of its heaviest drone assaults of the war overnight into Friday, targeting a dozen Russian regions, Russian-held Crimea and surrounding seas, Russia’s Defense Ministry said, reporting that air defenses intercepted 660 Ukrainian drones — above a prior recent peak of 556 on May 17.

Ukraine’s Security Service said drones struck Russian naval support vessels and air-defense systems around Kerch, claiming hits on the Volga and Vyatka cable ships, the Petropavlovsk ferry and an S-400 radar/weapons site covering the Kerch Strait, with a large fire reported. Russian-installed authorities in Crimea and Sevastopol declared a regional “emergency situation” citing fallout from Ukrainian strikes, including fuel and power disruptions. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had the day before approved a 40-day “influence operation” aimed at compelling Russia to end the war.
