What we know

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday outside No. 10 Downing Street that he will resign as Labour Party leader, paving the way for a contest to choose a new prime minister less than two years after Labour’s July 2024 landslide. He said he had informed King Charles III and would remain caretaker prime minister until a successor is chosen.

Starmer said nominations open July 9 and that a new leader should be in place before Parliament returns in September. Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, sworn in Monday as MP after winning the Makerfield by-election, said he would stand; former Health Secretary Wes Streeting endorsed him, raising the chance of a rapid handover.
