Ebola Cases Exceed 1,000 in Democratic Republic of the Congo

In Short: The Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 1,000 confirmed Ebola cases, with 86 new cases reported in Ituri, North Kivu, and Haut Uele provinces.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 1,000 confirmed Ebola cases, with 86 new cases reported in Ituri, North Kivu, and Haut Uele provinces. The majority of cases are in Ituri, where 5,065 cases and 2,305 deaths have been reported. North Kivu has seen 868 cases and 589 deaths. The ministry reported 1,003 cumulative confirmed cases and 254 cumulative deaths, with 10 people dying from unusual circumstances, raising concerns.
In total, 88% of identified case contacts are under follow-up in the affected provinces. However, the contact follow-up rate currently sits at 58 percent, according to Congolese health officials. The Congolese officials stated that they lacked the logistical support required to put in place a robust response at the start of the outbreak, which has limited the ability to weed out the new strain of the virus.
Despite challenges, 100 people have successfully recovered from the virus. The Committee commends the Government of Uganda for the rapid control of BVD transmission, with no new cases detected since 16 July 2026. As of 18 August 2026, approximately 5,000 BVD cases have been reported in the DRC.
