What we know

Conservative political outsider Abelardo de la Espriella held a razor-thin lead over progressive senator Iván Cepeda in Colombia’s presidential runoff on Sunday, with electoral authorities releasing nearly all preliminary results and no formal winner declared overnight.

De la Espriella, a businessman and lawyer who had never previously run for office and who received an endorsement from U.S. President Donald Trump, led with about 49.7% to Cepeda’s 48.7% — a gap on the order of a quarter-million votes — as turnout climbed above 60%. Cepeda’s camp said it would await the full ballot-by-ballot canvass and flagged challenges at tens of thousands of polling tables. The winner is scheduled to take office Aug. 7, succeeding term-limited President Gustavo Petro.
