The United States defeated Australia 2-0 in Seattle on Friday without injured star Christian Pulisic, securing a World Cup round-of-32 berth with one group match still to play. An own goal by Australia’s Cameron Burgess in the 11th minute and a 43rd-minute header from 21-year-old Alex Freeman gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side consecutive World Cup wins for the first time since 1930.

Paraguay’s 1-0 win over Turkey later Friday in Santa Clara locked the U.S. atop Group D. As group winners the Americans are set for a July 1 round-of-32 match in Santa Clara against a third-place finisher from another group.
