Ebola Outbreaks in DRC and Uganda

In Short: The Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda have reported significant cases of Ebola, with the DRC facing a severe outbreak while Uganda has successfully contained its transmission.
On September 1, 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported a total of 6,186 confirmed cases of Ebola, including 3,007 deaths, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
In contrast, Uganda reported 20 cases between May and June 2026, with no new cases detected since July 16, 2026, as the Ministry of Health announced the successful containment of the Bundibugyo virus transmission.
The US CDC reported a positive case of Bundibugyo virus in a US citizen working for a humanitarian organization in DRC on July 10, 2026.
The WHO commends the Government of Uganda for its rapid control of the outbreak, and acknowledges the significant efforts being made by the DRC, affected communities, and international partners to manage the situation.
