Burnham wins Makerfield by-election, paving path to challenge Starmer
Confirmed
What we know
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won Friday’s Makerfield by-election with nearly 55% of the vote, securing a House of Commons seat that makes him eligible to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for Labour leadership. Burnham defeated Reform UK’s Robert Kenyon by more than 9,000 votes in the northwestern England constituency vacated by Labour MP Josh Simons.
Starmer congratulated Burnham and said he would stand in any leadership contest, insisting he would not “walk away.” Burnham called the result a possible “turning point” and told Labour it was a “final chance to change,” without formally announcing a challenge on Friday.
