G7 pledges more Ukraine air defenses and tighter Russia sanctions
Confirmed
What we know
Group of Seven leaders meeting in Evian-les-Bains, France, on Wednesday pledged to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and long-range capabilities and to tighten sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas sectors, according to their geopolitical statement and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy, who attended the summit and met U.S. President Donald Trump, said partners also committed to defense and energy resilience support.
French President Emmanuel Macron described “unprecedented convergence” among G7 leaders, including Trump, on maintaining Ukraine aid. The leaders said they would consider licenses to expand Ukraine’s own military production and framed tougher Russia energy measures as timely after the U.S.-Iran framework to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
