What we know

A U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff around 11:20 a.m. Monday at Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert and burst into flames, killing all eight people aboard, military officials said. Col. James Hayes, deputy commander of the 412th Test Wing, said after reviewing footage that the crash was unsurvivable and that the bomber was supporting the radar modernization program.

Those aboard included uniformed airmen, government civilians and contractors; Boeing confirmed Monday evening that two of its employees were on the flight. The airfield closed for much of the day as crews fought the fire; Hayes said the investigation could take up to six months and no cause was immediately known.
