Iran sets Khamenei funeral July 4–9; burial in Mashhad
Confirmed
What we know
Iranian state media reported Saturday that funeral ceremonies for late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will run from July 4 to July 9, beginning in Tehran and ending with burial in his hometown of Mashhad. Ceremonies are also planned for July 7 in the holy city of Qom.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 in the opening U.S. and Israeli strikes of the war; an earlier March burial plan was postponed as fighting continued. Islamic practice usually calls for prompt burial, with wartime exceptions. Son Mojtaba Khamenei succeeded him as supreme leader.
