US, Iran exchange strikes after Apache downed near Hormuz
Confirmed
What we know
The United States and Iran traded strikes Wednesday after President Donald Trump blamed Tehran for downing a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache near the Strait of Hormuz, jolting a two-month ceasefire and pushing crude higher. U.S. Central Command said Air Force, Navy and Marine aircraft hit Iranian military surveillance, communications and air-defense sites; Iran acknowledged blasts around Tehran, Bandar Abbas and other southern areas.
Tehran responded with drones and missiles toward Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan — hosts of U.S. forces — while Kuwait closed airspace and CENTCOM rejected Iranian claims that Hormuz was fully closed. U.S. officials said the Apache collided with an Iranian drone; both crew survived a first-of-its-kind rescue by an uncrewed surface vessel. Separately, U.S. forces disabled another tanker accused of breaching the Iran oil blockade.
