At least 37 people have died and hundreds injured in a magnitude-7.8 earthquake that struck part of the southern Philippines early on Monday, collapsing buildings and triggering tsunami alerts. The earthquake, which also caused landslides, left 479 people injured and four missing, mostly from falling debris and landslides, according to civil defence officials.
In Davao del Sur, a high school collapsed as students gathered outside, and multiple hospitals were damaged, according to the chairman and CEO of the Philippines Red Cross, Richard Gordon. The safety of the students was a major concern, with many seeking medical treatment in makeshift environments like tents due to fears of aftershocks.
Tsunami warnings were cancelled after more than six hours, but the earthquake left a significant impact on the region. The president of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, said evacuation centres were ready and operational as government agencies continued to assess the damage and clear routes for rescue operations.
The earthquake also caused panic among students, with a video showing pupils scrambling for safety during the morning flag ceremony at Mahayhay elementary school in Davao. The Philippines Red Cross reported attending three high schools to support students traumatised by the quake, emphasizing the need for safety in the aftermath of the disaster.
