Lebanon leaders slam Iran as bargaining chip; ceasefire frays
Confirmed
What we know
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Friday accused Iran of treating Lebanon as a "bargaining chip" in Tehran's talks with Washington, after the Revolutionary Guard said there would be "no calm in the region" unless Israel withdrew from Lebanon. Aoun told CNN he rejected the IRGC statement "totally" because Lebanese people were being killed and homes destroyed; Salam said Lebanon "should not remain a battlefield for others."
Israeli strikes continued Friday despite a U.S.-mediated ceasefire agreed Wednesday between the Israeli and Lebanese governments. CNN tallied more than 20 killed in Friday strikes from Lebanon's state news agency; AP separately reported nine killed in six southern locations plus new evacuation warnings. Hezbollah rejected the truce terms; parliament speaker Nabih Berri said any halt must be complete by land, sea and air.
