Twelve patients were taken to Stafford Hospital and have since been discharged, while 44 people were taken to hospitals, including three in critical condition, police said. The roadway has since fully reopened, according to a Virginia State Police spokesman.
The crash occurred on the southbound side of Interstate 95, and the bus struck a Chevrolet Suburban, which was then forced into an Acura SUV and additional vehicles, police said.
