Israeli strikes kill 14+ in Tyre, south Lebanon ahead of Washington talks
Confirmed
What we know
Israeli forces pounded the southern Lebanese port city of Tyre and surrounding areas overnight and into Thursday after declaring zones south of the Zahrani River "combat zones" and ordering mass evacuations, killing at least 14 people across the south according to Lebanon's Health Ministry and state media — with Al Jazeera citing authorities later putting the day's toll higher. Afternoon strikes also hit a southern Beirut suburb near the airport, the first capital-area attack in three weeks, a day before Lebanese and Israeli military officials were due at Pentagon-mediated security talks in Washington.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the Tyre and Nabatiyeh "onslaughts" as collective punishment and demanded an immediate ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal. Hezbollah dismissed the Washington track and urged Beirut to walk away, while Israel said it was deepening operations against Hezbollah infrastructure and would still attend the talks aimed at disarmament and border security under the fraying April 17 ceasefire.
