What we know

Novak Djokovic reached the French Open third round for a 21st straight year on Wednesday, surviving a 3-hour, 44-minute heat-wave grind against France's Valentin Royer, 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-3, on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The 39-year-old iced his neck and head on changeovers as temperatures again topped 32°C (90°F) for a fourth straight day at Roland Garros.

Royer, ranked 74th and with only one tour-level win this season before Paris, saved a match point in the third-set tiebreak and forced Djokovic to waste several more before a long rally ended the match. Djokovic next faces 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca. Elsewhere on a big day for Ukraine, Yuliia Starodubtseva upset Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina while Marta Kostyuk and Elina Svitolina also advanced; Iga Swiatek moved on in straight sets.
