A strong odor at the Ginza Six shopping mall in central Tokyo prompted emergency calls and left at least 25 people complaining of feeling unwell Monday, police and fire authorities said. A Tokyo police spokesperson said a man sprayed a substance at an ATM on the ground floor, while a local fire department official said “around 20 people were injured” after a report of a “smell”.

The road in front of the mall – located in the touristy and upmarket shopping district of Ginza – was blocked off following the incident, and fire trucks lined the street. According to TBS, 25 people, both men and women, have reported feeling unwell, and 14 of them — two men and 12 women — have been taken to the hospital.

“By the time I arrived, the commotion had already started, and I thought there might have been a small fire or something,” she said. Police are investigating the cause, a fire department officer at the scene said.

Similar complaints were also made at a nearby police box, TBS reported. The public broadcaster NHK said the injuries appeared to be light.
