What we know

U.S. President Donald Trump landed back in Washington on Friday after a two-day Beijing summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping that produced no tangible Chinese commitment to end the Iran war or reopen the Strait of Hormuz, CNN, Reuters and ABC News reported Saturday.

Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that Xi agreed Iran must reopen Hormuz and should not have a nuclear weapon — positions Beijing had stated before — and said he was considering whether to lift U.S. sanctions on Chinese oil buyers of Iranian crude. Administration officials told CNN they had waited on the China trip before choosing a path; Trump now faces whether to resume strikes or keep pressing diplomacy as gas prices climb and midterms approach.
