A shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building Wednesday afternoon left two people dead and at least six injured, including police officers, authorities said. The suspect, who exchanged gunfire with responding officers, also died, though the manner of death was unclear.

Interim Minneapolis Police Chief Bill Peterson said all three officers are in stable condition. Officers entered the high-rise apartment building, where they encountered victims and heard additional gunfire. They followed the sound of gunfire to an upper floor, where they encountered a haze that significantly limited their visibility.

A KARE reporter spoke with multiple witnesses who saw people injured in the lobby of an apartment building. A woman reported hearing 25 to 30 shots, as multiple officers entered the building. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz expressed relief that the injured officers were expected to make a full recovery and thanked first responders.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in St. Paul said it was responding to the scene. The incident occurred around 4:36 p.m., but additional 911 callers reported hearing more gunfire, according to Peterson.
