What we know

Always a Runner rallied five-wide to win the 152nd Longines Kentucky Oaks by 1¼ lengths Friday night at Churchill Downs, capturing the first Oaks run under the lights in prime time on NBC, AP, NBC Sports and America's Best Racing reported. Jose Ortiz rode the Chad Brown-trained Gun Runner filly, owned by Douglas Scharbauer and Three Chimneys Farm, past Meaning and Counting Stars in 1:48.62 for 1⅛ miles before a crowd of about 103,000.

Always a Runner improved to 3-for-3 after overcoming pneumonia that kept her from racing as a 2-year-old; Brown earned his first Oaks win and Ortiz his second (2019 Serengeti Empress) while also scoring five wins on the card. The $1.5 million Grade 1 paid $13.04 to win and sets the stage for Saturday's Kentucky Derby.
