Fulleffort scratched from Kentucky Derby with ankle chip; Ocelli draws into field
Confirmed
What we know
Fulleffort was scratched from Saturday's Kentucky Derby after trainer Brad Cox said an X-ray revealed a chip in the colt's left hind ankle, AP, Daily Racing Form and Churchill Downs reported Thursday. Cox told AP the Jeff Ruby Steaks winner showed lameness, will undergo surgery and is expected to return later; the scratch leaves Cox with Commandment and Further Ado and moves Whit Beckman's also-eligible Ocelli into the 20-horse field.
The move comes a day after Silent Tactic was ruled out, and follows Oaks scratches that reshaped Friday's first prime-time Kentucky Oaks card under the lights. Ocelli, third in the Wood Memorial and still a maiden after six starts, will start for Beckman after galloping at Churchill Downs on Thursday morning.
